Looking for a job – Where to Start?

1. Posting your CV on-line

  • Use websites such as: Monster, Recruit Ireland, Loadzajobs, Irish Jobs, Jobs.ie, eFinancial and Linkedin.  Get your CV on as many sites as possible.  Once your CV is posted make sure you go in to review how it appears.  Make sure it looks attractive to prospective employers.
  • Update your CV on sites regularly
This will ensure that your CV will first of all appear on the:
    •    Top of a Search – Hiring managers may be searching through pages of CVs so it is essential that you are always at the top of a search to ensure that your CV is viewed
    •    Key words – use key words in your CV as much as possible.  For example if you have experience in a certain area of law such as funds, put it in as much as possible.

2. Agencies

  • Research – Research the best agencies out there and the ones that specifically specialise in HR Recruitment – for example – Sigmar!
  • Referrals - Talk to friends and colleagues who may be able to recommend a consultant who they had firsthand experience with.  With the amount of applications coming through it is better to get a warm introduction as you are more likely to get a call back.
  • Local agencies – Local agencies are probably best if you are looking outside of the City Centre.

3. Apply Directly

  • Job Websites (such as Irish Jobs) – When searching select employer only and you will see a list of live vacancies that companies are recruiting for directly.
  • Target Companies – As a starting point you can look on the irishjobs hompage and get a list of companies in alphabetical order.  Check their homepages for vacancies.  A lot of companies are not necessarily using the job boards at the moment as this is an extra cost for them.

4. Use your Own Network – this is extremely important in todays market

  • Friends & Colleagues - Talk to friends or colleagues who may be working in companies you are interested in.  They may be able to get your CV directly to the manager which will set you apart from the rest of applications in their inbox.  They may also know of something coming up with a client of theirs.
  • LinkedIn – This is rapidly becoming a very useful recruiting tool.  Post on your home page what you are qualified in – for example: HR Generalist with experience in talent management – available immediately.  Recruiters and HR Managers do search through linkedin and they may be connected to you through friends.  Make sure your profile is open so contacts of friends can see your page.  This will make you more visible to people searching.
